Clue: Slip-ons will (re)direct you

Solution: Information from Wikipedia

A shoulder mark, also called a shoulder loop, (rank) slide, slip on, epaulette sleeve, or (erroneously) an epaulette, is a flat cloth sleeve worn on the shoulder strap of a uniform. It may bear rank or other insignia.

This clue links with previous solutions we have spoken about the isignias (also with the twitter photo from a clue which was modified by putting insignias on the uniforms of the characters).

One thing to note on all of this though is the way that insignias are used and they are used for ranks, so this probably has to do a lot with the new Bing search engine [ranking methods].

OK I think the guys at MS are “slipping” into their fantasy world here. Pink pyjamas? Pink silk underwear? And now slip-ons?

As an aside – Bing wallpaper today is of Edinburgh. James Stuart, the Old Pretender, was James VIII of Scotland (as well as James III of England).

I think the shoulder strap slip-ons are more likely referred to by the clue than the ladies’ flimsies!

“will (re)direct you” could refer to being redirected to the winning webpage when the valid code is input.

The slip-ons denote rank. Numerous clues have pointed us to soldiers, Dad’s Army, WWII etc. So maybe a military rank forms at least part of the code. Private? Corporal (Jones in Dad’s Army)? Captain (Mainwaring in Dad’s Army)? General (Dirty Dozen)?

The code may, alternatively, contain an abbreviation of one of these ranks – pvte, capt, gen etc.

Going back to old clues – the smoking soldiers in the guardroom painitng had single stripes added to their sleeves, which made them lance corporals. Whirlpool say that the stripes had a key added to the point of the inverted V of the stripe (could indicate a key to the code?).

LiveInGeorge over at Whirlpool pointed us to the Wunderman site (the people behind the prize website), where they end their description of the $10,000 competition with the words “And on a final note:
Put a v on your shoulder”

Looking at the Australian Army insignia (the Army has been dominant over the other services in the clues) http://www.diggerhistory.info/images/badges-asstd/ranks.jpg the single stripe is indicative of a Lance Corporal (LCPL) or Lance Bombardier (LBDR). So one of these ranks may form part of the code.

Hint: The code is NOT one of the following:
lcpl, Lcpl, LCPL, lbdr, Lbdr, LBDR!!

Oh well – new clue: Oh, a virtue of our post

Sorry about this Wombat, it went into spam for some reason, probably cause you had more than one link on the comment :P so had to authorize it, have posted your comment on the new clue for now, will try and figure it out tomorrow :)

  6. Wombat says:

Ah, fair enough. I take back my money on “private” being in the anagram! Lol.
