LG to Release Android Mobile Phones with VMware Virtualization

Category: Android,iPhone / iTouch / iPad,Windows Mobileadmin @ 9:32 pm

Ever wanted to have a phone that would have the option to be two phones in one? By that I dont mean dual-sim but rather a phone that would be able to switch between being a phone for work and a personal phone.

Well looks like VMWare was able to implement virtualization into Android, so you will be seeing a lot of virtual phones in the market soon.

All we know is that its only aimed at Android phones, but who knows if it will ever be implemented into iPhones and Windows phones.

HTC, and Samsung Sued for Millions Over Carrier IQ

Category: Android,iPhone / iTouch / iPad,Windows Mobileadmin @ 5:49 pm

This was to be expected, but didnt think it would be this fast, I am glad that the Senate is taking action immediately.

The plaintiffs go after Carrier IQ as well as Samsung and HTC for violating the Federal Wiretap Act.

The suits allege that as customers were using their phones, the handset makers were surreptitiously monitoring and collecting private information without permission. If they lose, the companies could face penalties of $100 for every day that violation took place.

Apps to Find your Mobile and Laptop (iPhone, Android, Windows Mobile)

Android

There are several options for Android devices. The first option is Where’s my Droid?. Where’s my Droid? can solve two problems. The first problem is if you misplaced your device. The app can call your phone and let you find it by hearing it ring. If you silenced the device, it will even turn the volume up and allow you to hear it ring. The second feature is useful as well. If your phone/device has GPS, the app will send you the location of the device by text.

There is another option for Android users, called Plan B. Why is it called Plan B? Plan B allows the user to install the app remotely and invisibly if the device is lost or stolen. The user can then track the device’s location remotely via emails sent by the application. This is useful if you happened to forget to install a security application to begin with.

iOS

For those of you on the iPhone/iPad you have even fewer options. One app available is Find My iPhone. The app is free if you own an iPhone 4/4S, iPad, or fourth generation iPod Touch. You can track your phone using its GPS and even wipe the phone remotely if you have sensitive data on your phone or device.

Android/iOS

There is one app that stands out in this category, and it runs on both Android/iOS. The application is called Lookout Mobile Security. It offers anti-spyware, anti-malware, phone tracking and contact backups in the Free version. For thirty US dollars, you get remote wiping/locking, privacy advisor for apps, call history and photo backup if you upgrade to the Premium version.

Windows Phone

Since Windows Phone is relatively new to the game, it only has one option. According to Microsoft, Find My Phone can track your phone if you’ve misplaced it or it was stolen. It can ring your phone even if it is silent or on vibrate. You can lock or wipe the phone remotely. The app can use either text messaging or push notifications (faster) to send commands.

Laptop

Laptops are tough to protect because they are so mobile and so widespread. Prey offers an easy, free solution to prevent theft. As soon as your laptop turns on by a thief, Prey will broadcast its location, even using open hotspots to do so when necessary. The application can take screenshots or activate the webcam to take a picture of the thief. Prey allows you to hide your personal information, such as passwords, remotely.

No matter what device you have, protect it. Losing a device can be devastating to a wallet and to an identity. The free solutions mentioned above can stop it from happening to you.

ChevronWP7 Labs + 1 Update – Unlock Windows Phone 7

Category: Windows Mobileadmin @ 5:55 pm

Shortly after launch, a few issues cropped up forcing us to stay up all night on Hot Pockets® churning out fixes. If you were previously having problems with unlocking your device, we ask that you please re-download the client and try again. (We released a new version.)

Some additional points we want to bring to your attention:

  • The 10-year-old Windows XP operating system is not supported. This is a limitation imposed by various Windows Phone prerequisites of this century.
  • Provided unlocks are equivalent to those provided by Microsoft’s App Hub. That means 10 side-loaded applications. That also means no “Interop access”.
  • When an unlock is attempted, your token is marked as Used immediately. If an unlock fails for whatever reason, it will be queued for reset. This process takes a little time, due to the validation hoops we must jump through.

Here’s a short change log of what we changed:

Unlock Utility

  • Added retry dialog, giving you a chance to unlock your Windows Phone screen if it’s locked. (Previously, you would have to wait in line again.)
  • Added cookie trimming, just in case you make a boo-boo while pasting it in.
  • Added platform checks, to avoid x86/x64 confusion.
  • Resolved an issue related to continuous position checking, even when a result was received.
  • Resolved an issue related to the attempted animation of the welcome text, before the window is fully loaded.
  • Resolved an issue related to the configuration file not being written to disk correctly in several cases (e.g. Internet Explorer “Run” users, indirect execution)

Website

  • Changed the text of three countries to match common equivalents (e.g. PRC to China). Users will now find Venezuela, China, and Pakistan much easier.

Backend Services

  • Improved logic in the queuing and registration areas
  • Shortened the timeout for failed unlocks from 5 to 3 minutes.
  • Improved some internal auditing. (To better document how users love to break things.)

Again we cannot emphasize enough — if you are still trying to unlock, please re-download a new copy of the client. We updated it and it’ll give you the best odds for success.

AVG Releases Free Antivirus for Windows Phone 7

Category: Windows Mobileadmin @ 2:50 pm

AVG has been around for quite awhile and have recently entered the growing mobile space (we hear Android is gangbusters for a/v scanners). They’ve now released a free “suite” for Windows Phones, combining an earlier product (Safe Search) with an actual virus scanner:

“Free Security Suite from AVG Mobilation – security software for Windows Phone™. Keep your device safe with just one click”

  • Safe Web Surfing – Stay safe from phishing and malware while surfing the web
  • Safe Search – Allowing you search the web avoiding malicious web sites

In addition, the virus scanner portion will scan over your music and images. Surprisingly, the scan is pretty fast though we do have to wonder about other vulnerabilities such as PDFs, docx and of course programs. We imagine though when it comes to the latter, AVG can only do so much within the siloed limitations of the Windows Phone OS. So how much of a threat could there be from music or images? We’re not too really to sure but we’re more concerned about side-loading XAP files from untrusted sources–something which this app doesn’t cover.

Still, for being free, it’s not bad. It can update/download new AV definitions and the Safe Search/Web Surfing is not bad if you’re worried about going to a malicious site. Worth the download? Perhaps–at 5MB, it sure won’t kill your device and giving it once-over (under 30 secs for most of you) may not be a bad idea. Read more at http://www.avgmobilation.com/ and pick the app up here in the Marketplace.

Update: Rafael Rivera has broken down the app to see what exactly it does. As of now, since there are no known threats to WP7, it scans for EICAR (test file) and the word עברית (Hebrew) but has no generics capability, meaning there’s very little that this will actually scan for.
