9 Top UK Businessmen Arrested in Bank Probe

Category: Othersadmin @ 2:12 pm

Police have arrested nine people, including two of Britain’s wealthiest entrepreneurs, on suspicion of fraud in connection with the 2008 collapse of Iceland’s Kaupthing bank during the global financial crisis.

Britain’s Serious Fraud Office said seven men aged between 42 and 54 were held in raids on two businesses and eight homes in London. The properties were being searched and the suspects questioned at police stations in the city. Two men, aged 42 and 43, were arrested in the Icelandic capital, Reykjavik.

Entrepreneurs Robert and Vincent Tchenguiz confirmed they were among those arrested in London and said they were “cooperating fully” with authorities. A police van was parked outside the office of the brothers’ investment firm, Rotch Property, in the upmarket Mayfair area.

The Tchenguiz brothers amassed a large property portfolio and had investments in some of Britain’s best-known retail brands, including grocer J. Sainsbury PLC and pub chain Mitchells & Butlers. But the business borrowed more than 1 billion pounds ($1.62 billion) from Kaupthing, and was plunged into crisis when the bank collapsed.

Icelandic media said former Kaupthing chairman Sigurdur Einarsson was also arrested in London.

Porn Stars Fighting for .xxx Domains

Category: Othersadmin @ 6:25 pm

Porn stars are set to rally against the proposed .xxx top-level domain name outside the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) public meeting in San Francisco next week.

The Free Speech Coalition (FSC), a porn trade group, has called a press conference and rally outside the Westin St Francis Hotel in Union Square at 12.30pm, 17 March.

FSC president Diane Duke has invited “all industry professionals and supporters of the adult entertainment community” to show up to the protest.

The organisation believes .xxx will harm the adult entertainment business. It believes the domain invites censorship and blocking, and that the proposed registry operator, ICM Registry, sees dollar signs but does not have the best interests of the industry in mind.

ICM has previously stated its belief that the FSC is a California-centric organisation that does not represent the interests of porn webmasters worldwide. Thousands of people have pre-applied for over 200,000 .xxx domains.

In a series of blog posts over the last week, Duke has coined a new slogan: “.XXX is bullshit!”

ICM has been campaigning for the right to run .xxx for about a decade. Its current application has been moving through ICANN for the last seven years. Millions of dollars have been spent, mainly by ICM’s president, British multimillionaire businessman Stuart Lawley.

The company recently hired M&C Saatchi, the noted ad agency, to come up with the slogan “Let’s be adult about it”.

Resistance to .xxx has been so fierce, from Christian groups as well as the porn business, that ICANN has had to create entirely new appeal and review mechanisms for processing the application.

The last such mechanism is a consultation with its Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC), which is due to take place at the ICANN meeting next week.

The GAC, which represents dozens of international governments, formally objects to .xxx based on the public policy views of a minority of its members, but ICANN has indicated that it intends to overrule it, an unprecedented move.

The FSC knows the cards are stacked against it, and so is also considering a lawsuit against ICANN and/or ICM, and seeks an injunction to prevent the .xxx domain going live.

Barring an intervention from governments, the rally may prove to be a fruitless gesture. El Reg will of course provide coverage direct from the scene next Thursday regardless, and will endeavour to provide as many photographs as possible.

HubSpot Gets Funds from Google, Sequoia Capital and Salesforce

Category: Othersadmin @ 2:17 am

Inbound marketing software company HubSpot announced Tuesday that it has received a $32 million round of Series D funding from Google Ventures, Sequoia Capital and Salesforce.com.

The five-year-old startup was one of the earliest firms (in my memory, at least) to take advantage of social media, search and mobile to attract leads and sales, frequently running online seminars on those subjects as a way to build up its now more than 4,000-member client base of small- and medium-sized business.

http://onstartups.com/Portals/150/images//hubspot-growth.jpg

HubSpot has one core software platform designed to increase website traffic and convert that traffic into leads and sales. Apps within the platform offer control panels for general website and lead management, blogging, SEO, analytics and social media monitoring.

In addition to the three new investors, HubSpot’s previous list of VC investors — General Catalyst, Matrix Partners and Scale Venture Partners — also participated in the round. Part of the new funding will be used to “provide liquidity to existing shareholders,” HubSpot said in a statement but did not otherwise disclose its plans. A total of $55 million has been raised to date.

Shop to Make Breast Milk Ice Cream

Category: Othersadmin @ 9:33 pm

I couldnt believe it when I read this:

LONDON (Reuters) – A specialist ice cream parlor plans to serve up breast milk ice cream and says people should think of it as an organic, free-range treat. The breast milk concoction, called the “Baby Gaga,” will be available from Friday at the Icecreamists restaurant in London’s Covent Garden.

Icecreamists founder Matt O’Connor was confident his take on the “miracle of motherhood” and priced at a hefty 14 pounds ($23) a serving will go down a treat with the paying public.

The breast milk was provided by mothers who answered an advertisement on online mothers’ forum Mumsnet.

Victoria Hiley, 35, from London was one of 15 women who donated milk to the restaurant after seeing the advert.

Hiley works with women who have problems breast-feeding their babies. She said she believes that if adults realized how tasty breast milk actually is, then new mothers would be more willing to breast-feed their own newborns.

“What could be more natural than fresh, free-range mother’s milk in an ice cream? And for me it’s a recession beater too — what’s the harm in using my assets for a bit of extra cash,” Hiley said in a statement.

“I tried the product for the first time today — it’s very nice, it really melts in the mouth.”

The Baby Gaga recipe blends breast milk with Madagascan vanilla pods and lemon zest, which is then churned into ice cream.

O’Connor said the Baby Gaga was just one of a dozen radical new flavors at the shop.

“Some people will hear about it and go, ‘yuck’ but actually it’s pure, organic, free-range and totally natural,” he said. “I had a Baby Gaga just this morning and I feel great.”

Coca Cola Ingredients Discovered

Category: Othersadmin @ 5:15 pm

http://www.topnews.in/files/Coca-Cola-Enterprises.jpgThe ingredients of the drink, created by John Pemberton, a medicinal pharmacist in 1886, have always been a mystery.

However, Thisamericanlife.org claims to have discovered a list in a photograph in a newspaper article giving the ingredients and exact quantities to make the drink.

The Feb 8 1979 edition of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has a photo of someone holding open a book with a recipe claimed to be an exact replica of Pemberton’s.

The recipe reportedly contains the exact measures of all the different oils needed for Coca Cola’s secret ingredient, Merchandise 7X.

Despite making up only one per cent of the drink’s total formula, Merchandise 7X is thought to give the popular soft drink its unique taste.

Note: Thi american life website is currently down, but we are unsure the reason behind it, they either got attacked, or sued by Coca Cola, or who knows.

Counterfeit Car Maker Makes Porsches, Ferrari and Lamborghini

Category: Othersadmin @ 11:14 pm

News from wired shows an interesting way of how Counterfeit Car Makers in Thailand are able to convert a normal car into a super car, here is the story:

You can buy cut-rate bootlegs of Mad Men and Chanel handbags all over the world. But if you want a fake Ferrari, you need to go to a garage on the outskirts of Bangkok. That’s where Chris Pongpitaya and his 10-man crew use scavenged and scratch-built parts to piece together ersatz Porsches, Maseratis, and other dream machines for enthusiasts whose budgets are too small to match their egos. “When you look at the car, there’s nothing different,” Pongpitaya says. “But when you test-drive it, you may notice.”

Buyers from Sweden to Dubai call on Pongpitaya, who learned his skills working for a Porsche parts supplier in Germany. He generally repurposes a chassis, taking, say, a Toyota MR2 as the base for a Lamborghini, or an Opel Carrera for an Aston Martin. Power depends on budget, but typically he’ll put Toyota engines in his Ferraris and Subaru engines in his Porsches. Pongpitaya picks up genuine locks, door handles, and other parts on the secondary market; body panels are all handcrafted in foam and fiberglass—fortified with Kevlar and carbon, with details copied from photographs and toys. Pongpitaya claims that his bodies are stronger and lighter than the aluminum and steel you’d get on a real supercar, and a Lamborghini from his shop costs about 4 million baht—around $130,000, roughly half of what a midrange (real) Lambo would set you back. It may not do 200 mph on the autobahn, but it’ll turn heads on city streets. Just hope no one looks under the hood.
