Adobe CS6 Released

Category: Technologyadmin @ 2:27 pm

Adobe  announced that Creative Suite 6 is now available.

The next-gen suite includes revamped versions of Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Flash Professional, among other things. CS6 also offers four suite versions: Creative Suite 6 Design & Web Premium; Creative Suite 6 Design Standard; Creative Suite 6 Production Premium; and Creative Suite 6 Master Collection.

Adobe Creative Cloud, meanwhile, will be available starting Friday, May 11. Adobe Creative Cloud will make all of the CS6 apps available to subscribers for download, and offer online services for sharing and publishing content created with the suite.

“We announced Creative Cloud and CS6 two weeks ago and these releases have caught the imagination of creatives everywhere,” David Wadhwani, senior vice president of Adobe’s Digital Media Business, said in a statement. “Today we’re shipping CS6 and look forward to the beginning of an exciting new era as we introduce Creative Cloud later this week.”

Adobe CS6 is available through Adobe and its re-sellers now. Pricing starts at $1,299 for CS6 Design Standard and moves up to $1,899 for CS6 Design & Web Premium or CS6 Design Standard, and $2,599 for CS6 Master Collection. Adobe is also offering tiered upgrade pricing, depending on how long you’ve had your current version.

For more, see PCMag’s full review of CS6 and its components:

  • Adobe Releases Creative Suite 6 (CS6): The leading digital media design software gets major overhaul and new online subscription pricing.
  • Adobe Photoshop CS6: Sure, it’s pricey, but Photoshop CS6 moves the bar even higher for image editing software, now with serious video editing, content-aware editing, and a cleaner interface. Check out the slideshow below, too.
  • Adobe Photoshop Touch (for iPad): Adobe has done an excellent job fitting its leading image editor to tablets. Using Photoshop Touch is easy and intuitive, but don’t expect anywhere near full Photoshop power.
  • Adobe Dreamweaver CS6: Adobe Dreamweaver CS6 is far away the world’s most powerful Web editor, though it’s a little rougher around the edges than its admittedly less-capable, Windows-only rival, Microsoft Expression Web.
  • Adobe InDesign CS6: The go-to software for page designers the world over, Adobe InDesign CS6 easily earns our Editors’ Choice and five stars for its wonderful flexibility and support for designers’ creativity.
  • Adobe Illustrator CS6: Adobe Illustrator CS6 remains the number-one vector drawing tool, particularly for professional.

Airport Body Scanner Vulnerabilities

Category: Technologyadmin @ 12:32 pm

Federal investigators “identified vulnerabilities in the screening process” at domestic airports using so-called “full body scanners,” according to a classified internal Department of Homeland Security report.

DHS has spent nearly $90 million replacing traditional magnetometers with controversial X-ray body scanning machines that are intended to detect items that could be missed by a metal detector.

Exactly how bad the body scanners are is not being divulged publicly, but the Inspector General report made eight separate recommendations on how to improve screening.

The news comes as authorities are examining an underwear bomb, allegedly seized by the CIA in Yemen as it allegedly thwarted an Al-Qaida plot to destroy a U.S.-bound airplane, according to The Associated Press. Authorities are now looking to determine if the bomb could have passed through airport screeners without being detected.

Meanwhile, an unclassified version of the Inspector General report, unearthed Friday by the Electronic Information Privacy Center, may give credence to a recent YouTube video allegedly showing a 27-year-old Florida man sneaking a metallic object through two different Transportation Security Administration body scanners at American airports.

The TSA agreed with all of the Inspector General’s recommendations. The Inspector General did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In March, meanwhile, a TSA spokeswoman said “These machines are safe” when asked to address a video by Jonathan Corbett, of Miami Beach, who allegedly had discovered a method tobeat the body scanners, which number 600 and are in about 140 U.S. airports. A brief YouTube video allegedly shows Corbett, who had sewn a pocket to the side of his shirt, getting past two body scanners with a metallic object in that pocket.

It was not immediately known when the TSA published its unclassified summary, TSA Penetration Testing of Advanced Imaging Technology. It comes with a “November 2011″ date and can be found on the DHS Office of Inspector General website under the heading “OIG Reports: Fiscal Year 2012.”

It’s not the first time the body scanners, produced by Rapiscan and L-3 Communications, have come under attack. In a three-part series last year, Wired reported that, indeed, there were suspected security flaws with them. Even the Government Accountability Office — Congress’ investigative arm — said the devices might be ineffective. And the Journal of Transportation Security suggested terrorists might fool the Rapiscan machines by taping explosive devices to their stomachs.

The unclassified summary said the government has spent $87 million on the scanners, which includes $10 million for “installation and maintenance.” To quiet privacy concerns, the authorities are also spending $7 million to “remove the human factor from the image review process” and replace the passenger’s image with an avatar.

The unclassified version said the “quantitative and qualitative results of our testing are classified.”

Passengers who refuse to go through the machines are subject to intense physical patdowns. Many have complained the process includes being sexually groped.

Amie Stepanovich, an EPIC attorney, said the group would file a Freedom of Information Act claim in a bid to get access to the full report. “This involves a program that is important to the public,” she said in a telephone interview.

EPIC had sued the government, claiming the machines were an unconstitutional breach of Americans’ privacy. A federal appeals court sided with the authorities, although the court said the government did not adhere to the law when it began implementing the machines at airports as early as 2007.

Virgin Media Starts Blocking Pirate Bay (Piratebay.se)

Category: Technologyadmin @ 1:33 pm

The United Kingdom’s High Court ruled on Monday that The Pirate Bay must be blocked by all local Internet services providers:

The ruling comes after a February decision that the site was infringing copyright in the United Kingdom. The UK entertainment industry has applauded the outcome.

“Sites like The Pirate Bay destroy jobs in the UK and undermine investment in new British artists,” the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) said in a statement.

Well, Virgin Media has become the first UK ISP to block the site. However, since that ruling, TorrentFreak reported that traffic to the site has actually increased!!

In fact, yesterday’s traffic beat The Pirate Bay’s best ever UK user number by a margin of over 12m extra unique visitors.

“We should write a thank you letter to the BPI,” a Pirate Bay worker stated, saying that the site took the opportunity to tell visitors how to overcome ISP blocks and that the publicity amounted to free advertising.

Looks like, The Pirate Bay’s owners urged UK users to circumvent ISP blockade:

The Pirate Bay’s founders said that users can set up anonymous connections using a virtual provate network (VPN). Alternatively, they can use a closed private network of computers, known as a darknet, or change their DNS settings with OpenDNS.

“Don’t forget that we can’t allow this shit to happen,” said TPB in a statement on its website. “Next time they’re coming for something else. And yes, there will be a next time if we don’t stop them.”

Well, there you go. Apparently, -and so far- ISP providers Virgin, Sky, TalkTalk, O2 and Everything Everywhere have agreed to block the site, and BT is yet to declare its position.

ReactOS (Microsoft Windows Alternative) Needs Funding

Category: Technologyadmin @ 12:49 pm

Thought I would give these guys a hand in getting a bit of support from the community, after all they have been working quite hard to get this project on the move.

Below is a brief description of what ReactOS is all about. Some screenies as well.

ReactOS® is a free, modern operating system based on the design of Windows® XP/2003. Written completely from scratch, it aims to follow the Windows-NT® architecture designed by Microsoft from the hardware level right through to the application level. This is not a Linux based system, and shares none of the unix architecture.

The main goal of the ReactOS project is to provide an operating system which is binary compatible with Windows. This will allow your Windows applications and drivers to run as they would on your Windows system. Additionally, the look and feel of the Windows operating system is used, such that people accustomed to the familiar user interface of Windows® would find using ReactOS straightforward. The ultimate goal of ReactOS is to allow you to remove Windows® and install ReactOS without the end user noticing the change.

Please bear in mind that ReactOS 0.3.14 is still in alpha stage, meaning it is not feature-complete and is not recommended for everyday use.

Mythic Video Game Scam

Category: Technologyadmin @ 8:06 pm

Crowdsourced funding site Kickstarter has suffered its first publicised scam.

An effort to raise cash for a role-playing video game was exposed as a fraud by users of Reddit, Something Awful and other sites.

The project had $4,739 (£2,922) in pledgesout of a target of $80,000 at the point it was pulled by its creator.

Kickstarter could not be reached for comment. The site has successfully funded nearly 22,000 schemes since it was created in 2009.

Mythic offers

Mythic: The Story of Gods and Men had promised “gameplay characteristics will be similar to that of World of Warcraft and the graphics quality should be up there with Skyrim”.

The commitment to compete on an equal footing with big budget titles and a claim that “animations will be done via motion capture thanks to some friends at Disney/Pixar” raised suspicions.

The scheme also offered supporters the chance of being motion captured so that they could appear as a “god” in the game, a life-sized sword and a copy of the soundtrack recorded “at the Disney Studios” if they gave enough money.

Internet users subsequently reported that teaser screenshots had been copied from unrelated concept art and graphic design tutorial websites.

‘Worried’

No money transferred hands as Kickstarter only charges backers’ credit cards if a project attracts enough support before a time limit expires.

However, some users have raised concerns about whether the site was doing enough to vet applicants.

“What worried me the most is how Kickstarter allowed this to be posted in the first place,” wrote David Kononen on the site’s comments page.

“A simple Google search, and I found out for myself this was very shady.”

The person responsible for the scam may have been trying to capitalise on the success of another video game.

The studio Double Fine recently raised over $3.3m from more than 87,000 backers to develop a new point-and-click adventure.

That sum has since been eclipsed by Pebble, an effort to build an e-paper based watch which has raised close to $7.7m in pledges, smashing its $100,000 goal with more than a fortnight to go before its deadline.

SkyDrive – Free Upgrade to 25GB

Category: Technologyadmin @ 12:58 pm

I just logged in to my SkyDrive account today (otherwise known as Windows Live Sync) and just noticed when I went into my storage management that there was an option to upgrade to 25GB for FREE!!!!!

Dropbox only gives you 2GB right now and Google Drive gives you 7GB.

You can grow your dropbox space by advertising on their behalf (referals) and even by using their upload to dropbox straight from your camera device which gives you an extra 3GB on your account. There are users out there with the equivalent of 20GB or so account with free space due to their referral.

VMWare Source Code Leaked

Category: Virtualizationadmin @ 1:17 am

VMware has confirmed that software posted online is part of the source code for its ESX hypervisor and has warned that more code could be released.

The code was posted by a hacker calling himself Hardcore Charlie and may come from military contractor China National Import & Export Corp (CEIEC), which he claimed to have successfully breached earlier in the month and downloaded over a terabyte of information. The CEIEC has denied that its servers were breached.
An excerpt of the stolen code
“The fact that the source code may have been publicly shared does not necessarily mean that there is any increased risk to VMware customers,” said Iain Mulholland, director of VMware’s Security Response Center in a blog posting.

“VMware proactively shares its source code and interfaces with other industry participants to enable the broad virtualization ecosystem today. We take customer security seriously and have engaged internal and external resources to thoroughly investigate.”

While the admission is embarrassing for VMware there may be more code to come from other vendors. Hardcore Charlie has said on his Twitter feed that he also has EMC code that will be put up online at a later date.

“Because of this success, virtual infrastructure is a prime target for attack – so the theft of VMware ESX source code, similar to RSA’s breach last year, is no surprise,” said Eric Chiu, president of cloud vendor HyTrust. “Platform security for virtual infrastructure is a must — without securing the virtual infrastructure, enterprises are leaving a huge area of their datacenter open to attack.”
