$10,000 58th Clue – Part Four: Rust. 7414-7422. Hyphenations and abbreviations are one.

Category: 10 Grand Clues and Answersadmin @ 12:09 pm

Clue: Part Four: Rust. 7414-7422. Hyphenations and abbreviations are one.

Solution: By Dweb

This refers to ‘Part Four’ titled ‘Trust’, from the book ‘Three Soldiers’ By John Dos Passos

http://www.ibiblio.org/eldritch/wwone/threes.html

http://www.ibiblio.org/eldritch/wwone/threes.html#part4

It looked as if we had to do a word count and identify words 7414-7422

(8 words) in the document. Although it looked as if it could be character count, the fact they ‘hyphenation and abbreviation’ to be counted as one made word count the more porobable solution.

Whirlpoolians are at it, soon after the clue was released. They have identified some relevant words, but yet to be solved fully.

$10,000 57th Clue – http://twitpic.com/dcdyr

Category: 10 Grand Clues and Answersadmin @ 11:24 am

Clue: http://twitpic.com/dcdyr -

Solution: By Dweb and Bassborg:

This is obvious now. I did try the password ‘Swordfish’ even before this clue (Thanks, bassborg!). Anyway password is not ‘Swordfish’.

What this implies is that we need a password to crack it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swordfish_%28password%29

The use of the word “Swordfish” refers to a password which originated in the 1932 Marx Brothers movie Horse Feathers in a scene where Groucho Marx, as Professor Wagstaff, attempts to gain access to a speakeasy guarded by Baravelli (Chico). It was referenced in the movie Swordfish, the Robot Chicken Episode Password: Swordfish, the Terry Pratchett novel Night Watch, the book The Sword of the Samurai Cat, the movie Meet the Applegates, the movie Arena, the computer games Discworld, Return to Zork and Quest for Glory, and a Commodore 64 computer game Impossible Mission. In the premier episode of the television show Sam & Max, a character says “What’s the password…?

And if you say ‘Swordfish’ I’ll lose it!”

Solution: By DWeb: [Thanks]

Refers to an Ebay listing – seller id ’seeking financial freedom’ and ending on the said date/time. Item listed is a book authored by Cyndi Kaplan, and by some coincidence (or not) there is a art school by the name of ‘Cyndi Kaplan’ at Bellevue Hill, NSW (which we came across in an old clue – Bell View Hill..)

Clue: Some birds can, some birds can’t. Theirs didn’t. Ours does.

Solution: I hope MS is not talking about girls ;) Here are some ideas from the members, but previous to their ideas here is mine: obviously there are birds that can fly and others that cant, although you could take this into a context where MS could be saying that their browser has all the options needed while firefox, opera and chrome dont, but anyways here are the posts:

By Wombat:

http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2009/06/bing-maps-birds-eye-view-gives-different-perspective/

“The limited search capabilities on Bing Maps, Microsoft’s web map system, might make it look like a poor cousin to Google, but it does have one interesting feature the Big G lacks — a bird’s-eye view of selected Australian cities.

Google’s similar-but-different Street View has a much wider range of coverage, but the angled view offered by the ‘Bird’s eye’ option in Bing does make the overall layout of some city areas much clearer. Currently, there are bird’s eye maps for central Sydney and Melbourne, Geelong, Hobart, Wollongong and the Gold Coast; Microsoft says additional maps will be added later this year.”

Bird’s Eye – a feature of Bing maps that others don’t have. Already available in Australia while not yet widely available throughout the world.

Human Nature

Quartet: Four in the Group

2 Brothers Andrew and Michael Tierney joined with Toby Allen and Phil Burton in 1989 while at Hurlstone Agricultural High School representing their school in a combined regional schools concert at the Bankstown Town Hall. The quartet were known as The 4 Trax, a name that they retained until they began their recording career. The band performed “Earth Angel” a 1950s hit for The Penguins.

Four with Flightless Birds..
