Apple is also talking up iOS 4.2 today, which will be everything iOS 4.1 is bringing, plus some extra goodies, and will finally bring iOS 4 (hello multitasking!) to the iPad. The most exciting of the new features is AirPlay, which is Apple’s redub for AirTunes, with the important addition of being able to stream music and video to your i-device over WiFi (with an iPad even acting as host for the new Apple TV). Also over WiFi is a new wireless printing feature, complete with a little Print Center applet that sits in the dock and lets you manage your print jobs. It might not be sexy, but it’s certainly a welcome addition to iOS. Apple will be launching iOS 4.2 for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch devices in November.

Apple has released iTunes 10 as promised, and is now available for download to the public for Mac and Windows.

iTunes 10 includes Ping, a brand new “social music discovery tool” creates a new experience for iTunes where users can follow their friends and share their favorite music.

It appears that iTunes 10 is Jailbreak safe for now, that is to say that a new Jailbreak tool might not work with iTunes 10, but seeing as there are none out right now that require iTunes, your JailbreakMe.com exploit should be just fine. Musclenerd also informed us that we should be safe as far as DFU Mode, syncing, and custom IPSW’s go, just stay away from iOS 4.1 next week.

iOS 4.1 GM has been released to official Apple Developers, and to our delight it includes the mentioned HDR support for Photos.

Aside from all the bug fixes, this is an addition we are looking forward to. As Michael reported, Apple is adding the new HDR (high dynamic range) standard to photos, an addition that apparently takes “photo quality to a whole new level”. All of which is included in the newly released GM.

The Stig has never taken his helmet off

The BBC has lost a legal fight to stop publication of a book which reveals the identity of Top Gear’s driver The Stig.

The High Court in London refused to grant the BBC an injunction blocking the publication by HarperCollins of an autobiography of former Formula Three driver Ben Collins.

The book, called The Man In The White Suit, claims Mr Collins is the mystery driver on the BBC Two show.

The BBC began legal action against HarperCollins last week.
It says it won’t confirm or deny that Ben Collins either was or remains The Stig.

But Top Gear presenter James May, who was a studio guest on BBC London when High Court’s decision was announced, made light of the situation.

He said: “Obviously I’m now going to have to take some legal action of my own, because I have been the Stig for the past seven years, and I don’t know who this bloke is, who’s mincing around in the High Court pretending it’s him.”

The Stig is famous for his racing overalls and dark-visored helmet. His identity has long been a closely-guarded secret on Top Gear – one of the BBC’s most popular shows in the UK and around the world.

Several racing drivers have been linked to the role, including former Formula One world champions Damon Hill and Michael Schumacher.

Mr Collins, 33, from Redland, Bristol, was in court for part of Wednesday’s hearing.

The first Stig, Perry McCarthy, was dropped in 2003 after his identity was uncovered.

As many of you know the PSJailBreak has been released and even though it had problems with Law Breaking in Australia, some suppliers were able to hand out demos to clients/distributors.

It was from that source that a couple of the chips were tracked down and reversed to find out how the hack works.

The goal here is to replicate it and hopefully make it free instead of paying a wooping $160!

You may have heard that the chinese engineers were able to replicate the device and are charging just $20 or even $10 if you look properly.

Here is a brief intro:

The PSJailbreak dongle is a modchip for the PlayStation3 that allows users to backup and play games off the harddrive. Unlike the modchips of the Previous generation, or the modchips so far for the Xbox360 and Wii, this modchip simply plugs into the USB port on the front of the PS3, avoiding the need for complex soldering and voiding of your warranty.

As the time of writing this document, the final PSJailbreak has not been released, but a number of samples were given out and at least one fell into the hands of someone who owned a USB sniffer. This analysis of the exploit is based on those USB sniffer logs, issues encountered during the development of the opensource PSGroove version of the exploit and a number of educated guesses. It will probably be updated as new information comes in.

The initial analysis by gamefreax.de suggested that it was a Stack overflow attack. After further analist it turns out that this exploit is a Heap Overflow attack. The exploit carefully manipulates the heap by plugging and unplugging fake usb devices with large device descriptors until the device on port 4 which misreports its size to overwrite one of malloc’s boundary tags.

The latest trend in team building programmes and corporate events near London is indoor skiing and snowboarding on real snow.

A unique team building experience at The Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead, only 20 minutes outside London, is The Mountain Challenge. What would a music experience designed specifically for the modern web look like? This is a question we’ve been playing around with for the last few months. Browsers and web technologies have advanced so rapidly in the last few years that powerful experiences tailored to each unique person in real-time are now a reality.

Today we’re excited to launch a musical experience made specifically for the browser. Called “The Wilderness Downtown”, the project was created by writer/director Chris Milk with the band Arcade Fire and Google. Building this project on the web and for the browser allowed us to craft an experience that is not only personalized, but also deeply personal for each viewer. “The Wilderness Downtown” takes you down memory lane through the streets you grew up in. It’s set to Arcade Fire’s new song “We Used to Wait” off their newly released album The Suburbs (which you may be familiar with, especially if you were one of 3.7 million viewers who live-streamed Arcade Fire’s concert on YouTube earlier this month). The project was built with the latest web technologies and includes HTML5, Google Maps, an integrated drawing tool, as well as multiple browser windows that move around the screen.

“The Wilderness Downtown” was inspired by recent developments in modern browsers and was built with Google Chrome in mind. As such, it’s best experienced in Chrome or an up-to-date HTML5-compliant browser. Microsoft is planning to enable Hotmail push email support for a wide range of phones including the iPhone, Windows Phone devices and Android next Monday.

Microsoft is introducing the support using Exchange ActiveSync, available on nearly 300 million phones. With push email you can sychronize email between your phone and the web, and also synchronize calendar and contacts. Microsoft originally revealed its plans back in April this year. The service will only work on mobile phones and not on desktop email clients.

Microsoft revealed the launch date for the service to CNET News.com in an interview earlier this week. Microsoft’s Dharmesh Mehta told CNET that Exchange ActiveSync, which will let Hotmail users get push e-mail on cell phones and other devices, will become available on Monday August 30.

Microsoft has traditionally used a closed door approach for access to Hotmail compared to offerings from its rivals. Google offers Exchange ActiveSync support with its Gmail service and Microsoft is aiming to ensure Hotmail offers everything gmail does and more. The new Hotmail also includes a single contact list of all online contacts including those from services like Facebook, LinkedIn and MySpace. Microsoft has also introduced Active Views to integrate the content and functionality of other websites directly into emails that users receive. If a contact sends you an email with a link to a YouTube video or a Flickr photo album, you will be able to view the video or photo slide show within the email itself.

Microsoft has been slowly introducing support for ActiveSync over the past month. In a message to some users attempting to access the service, the software giant explained they have had capacity issues. “To get Hotmail on-the-go, you recently tried to set up a service called ActiveSync from your mobile device. We are really glad that you’re interested, but we had so many sign-ups that we had to temporarily stop accepting new ones.”

Once the service is enabled on Monday you can select the Exchange option from your mobile and point the server address to m.hotmail.com
