As reported by many sites now and even a previous post I did sometime ago, a couple of Indian scammers persist in calling random UK numbers to get money from people by telling them that they are from “Microsoft” or “Windows”, this obviously creates a smooth entry and trust towards the target by fooling them around with fake information.
Their main target are people that dont know much, if nothing at all – about computers. These type of people are easy targets since they will believe anything that a semi techinal person would tell them.
Luckily I have advised all of my customers and members of family to hang up the phone if they get such a call, they would call me anyways if there is such a problem with their systems either way though since I am their techie.
I personally have had roughly around 4 different calls, all from India.
They will mention things like:
- They are based in the UK
- They fix your computer free of charge remotely this one time.
- They are from Microsoft
- They are from Windows
- You have a virus on your computer and Microsoft is fixing it for free
- The Microsoft service reported that your computer crashed.
These are things you should know:
- Microsoft doesnt provide that sort of service, so you will never get a call from Microsoft themselves.
- Dont let anyone into your computer unless you trust them.
- If your system seems fine, then more than likely it is and you dont have a crash or virus.
- Dont give your card details out through the phone.
- There is no Microsoft server that stores your details or crashes of your PC.
What you should do:
- Hang up straight away.
- Play around with them verbally if you can, waste as much time as you can on the phone with them… Remember they have to spend money to call here, even if they get it for cheap.
- Leave a comment here with your experience.
The last call I got was supposedly about my “windows computer” crashing. I can assure you that it hasnt, and even if it does then I would fix it myself.
So the conversation went something like this:
Scammer: Hello Sir, this is xxx from Windows.
Me: Hi there
Scammer: We had a message from our servers that your computer has crashed and we need to fix it. Alright?
Me: So, how did you get this information into your servers?
Scammer: What happens sir is when you surf the internet, send some emails, or working on your computer in that point of time, so a file is generated and put into your boot sector, it then gets replicated and sent to our server. If you can give me access to your computer I can fix it for you remotely through the internet.
Me: When did you get the information across?
Scammer: No sir, its just a free service call. Alright?
Me: When did you get the log through to your servers? Since when has my computer been infected?
Scammer: Sir I tell you what happens, your computer is controlled by our international, thats why we have to make this call, alright?
Me: How the hell is my PC controlled by your systems? I didnt give you permission for that.
Scammer: When you bought your computer, you have an IP address, your PC is controlled by our servers.
Me: Which computer are you on about?
Scammer: You have a 1 IP address….. even if you have 10000 computers, its all under 1 IP address. If you can switch on 1 PC or 3 then I can help you fix them.
Me: I have 7 PC’s
Scammer: Switch on any computer, I will guide you through it. Alright?
Me: Did you not say you are a Windows company?
Scammer: [long pause], Sir we are calling from the Global PC Help.
Me: I thought you initally said the Windows Security Center or something, no? Did you just change the company name?
Scammer: I beg you pardon sir? ……….. No Sir, we are calling from the Windows Service Center our name is Global PC Help.
Why are you changing our company name?
Me: So you are going to help me clean my windows right? They are really dirty right now. Its really black right now. The whole windows is black.
Scammer: I am talking about your Microsoft Windows OS computers.
Me: Oh right, I see, you didnt mention that before, I thought you were talking about the Windows in my house
Scammer: No sir, I am talking about your PC. Your software.
Me: Ah right, I thought you were talking about my windows, I didnt see anyone to clean my windows.
Scammer: No sir I am not talking about your personal windows. If you were a gentleman you would understand what I am talking about. Alright sir?
Me: I think there is misunderstanding here, because I dont have windows. I have Macintosh.
Scammer: Sorry?
Me: Apple Mac
Scammer: Apple Mac?
Me: Yeah 7 of them
Scammer: Sorry sir we have news from your PC – that you have a windows PC. alright?
Me: (I am really hating the way he keeps saying alright?), No not right…. I am giving you the right information.
Scammer: Well sir, if you are not interested thats your point of you. No problem. We have to make this call to fix your PC, alright?
Me: I dont have windows I have mac. So your information is wrong. And Linux too.
Scammer: Ah ok bye

Scammer: So what do you see?
Me: Just black… windows…. are you able to login to my pc and clean it?
Scammer: Sorry your computer has already crashed down [ermmm.... isnt this what you are calling about??????]
Me: So you cannot fix it?

Scammer: Alright sir, I am sorry to say sir because I dont argue with you sir, you are not interested, you are playing with me, just joking with me.
